2010 Youth in Government Conference
By High/Middle School Office
The White Pigeon Youth in Government students attended the late Spring conference from March 24th through March 28th. The State Y.M.C.A. Youth in Government program provides about 1600 high school students with the unique opportunity to become acting state legislators, lobbyists, lawyers, committee chairs etc. In essence the students will simulate all phases and positions that the actual state government calls for. These students are challenged with many of the issues our real legislators must face in their elected offices. Advisor, Mary Middleton, attends the conference with the students as well as overseeing groups of students during the four day conference. Members this year were Kenton Barczak, Alicia Clark, Atty Flood, Morgan DeMeyer, Morgan Gremore, Taylor Hagen, Brittany Harman, Nicolette Kershner, Nate Komins, Holly Krull, Amanda Lammon, Jordan Phelps, Josh Sawyer, Jake Saunders, Tiffany Schumacher, Roger Stewart.
Nate Komins was selected as a Committee Chair, Tiffany Schumacher was Secretary to the Senate and Morgan Gremore Electronic Press Editor. The other members acted as senators and representatives in various committees where they debated, edited and voted to pass or fail bills to move on to the House and Senate for further debate and vote into law.
Morgan Gremore was awarded for Electronic Press Editor. Nate Komins received an award for the best bill brief at the conference. Brittany Harman and Nicolette Kershner had the honor of writing and submitting the first bill to be signed into law by the governor.
