I am a graduate of the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education, a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and a Master of Music degree in Clarinet with a minor in jazz studies. I spent the first 15 years of my time in White Pigeon as the Director of Bands, transferring to Central Elementary in the fall of 2010. For me, both levels of teaching are equally engaging and the very different sets of joys and challenges inspiring. My most memorable moment of teaching at Central came in my second year when a first grade class asked their teacher to play some jazz during free work time. They didn't want just any jazz - they requested bebop or progressive rather than swing!
At Central Elementary my two main goals have been to develop and implement curriculum based on the Michigan Fine Arts Standards and to integrate technology into my music lessons. Starting in September 2014 I will be taking on the additional role of Technology Coach, teaching a weekly tech lesson to every class in our building.
I'm currently serving on the Operations Board of the Michigan Music Education Association as Webmaster and IT Coordinator and am on the board of directors for the Michigan Music Conference, serving as Chair of the Technology Planning Committee. I also continue to perform as a clarinetist for ensembles in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois and in 2016/2017 presented sessions on technology in the music classroom in Texas, New York and Michigan. In my free time I enjoy gardening and hanging out at home with our greyhounds and cats.
